In this food blog website case study, we share how we helped a food blogger recover from a failed project and launch a fast, functional, and customized website that meets both content and technical demands.

The Challenge

When Home Cooks World approached us, the project was already underway—but off course. The client had started with a different developer, but that relationship ended in frustration due to unmet expectations and a lack of technical clarity.

From our very first meeting, we understood this was more than just a food blog—it was a highly personalized platform where attention to detail and technical customization were key.

Our Approach

Our goal was to build a fast, scalable, and easy-to-manage food blog using GeneratePress Premium, while minimizing plugin usage and maximizing flexibility through custom code.

Understanding Her Needs

  • She already owned a GeneratePress Premium license and a plugin called Recipe Card Blocks, which unfortunately did not support embedded vertical video per recipe.
  • We contacted Recipe Card Blocks’ support with her to verify limitations.
  • After confirming its limitations, we proposed WP Recipe Maker Premium which uses shortcodes, making it easy to embed videos alongside each recipe.

Custom Recipe Template with Video

To meet her requirements:

  • We built a custom recipe template that allowed her to simply paste a video URL and fill in recipe details.
  • On the front end, the recipe details and video display seamlessly.

Technical Customization Highlights

  • Child Theme Setup: To protect all customizations during theme updates.
  • Comments Section: We rewrote the default comment template to meet her unique style preferences.
  • Right Sidebar Customization: Designed a custom sidebar on single recipe pages to showcase relevant posts using GeneratePress’s template builder.
  • Minimal Plugin Philosophy: We wrote custom code where possible to reduce plugin bloat (e.g., auto-updating copyright year).

SEO, Speed, and Security

  • Integrated Rank Math for SEO configuration.
  • Recommended and configured WP Rocket for performance optimization.
  • Deployed Cloudflare CDN to boost global load times and improve privacy by masking origin IPs.
  • Suggested GTranslate for multilingual access.
  • Navigation menus were rebuilt from scratch for both desktop and mobile.

With these tools and adjustments, the site achieved a PageSpeed Insights score of 86, despite being image- and script-heavy due to recipes and video embeds.

Legal & Functional Additions

We also assisted in creating and integrating:

  • Terms of Service
  • Privacy Policy
  • Affiliate Disclosure

She preferred not using extra legal plugins, so we formatted and styled these manually.

Community Recipe Submission Form

One of the most exciting features was enabling community-contributed recipes:

  • We built a front-end form where other home cooks can submit their own recipes.
  • Upon submission, she receives an email notification.
  • Once approved from the admin panel, the recipe goes live

After launching the new website with all requested features in place—including custom recipe templates, video support, and community submissions—our client was thrilled with the results. Here’s what she shared:
